On October 30, 2016 (Sunday), in the closing ceremony of the 6th World Uchinanchu Festival, Governor of Okinawa Onaga, the President of the Convention Executive Committee, declared the establishment of “World Uchinanchu Day”.
Over 100 years ago, Uchinanchu strived to succeed in foreign lands, carrying a strong will and the spirit of Bankoku Shinryo (Bridge between Nations). They overcame many difficulties, and created new lives abroad, and passed on their Okinawan culture and identity to their children and grandchildren. Our hope is to promote and develop the international Uchina network they have created and help it to prosper in the future. With this goal, World Uchinanchu Day was created on this day.
